Stedlijk Museum Amsterdam

On our way back to Portland from Portugal, we spent an overnight in Amsterdam and took the opportunity to spend some time at the Stedlijk Museum, which we hadn't visited in several years. It's a lively place, featuring a good collection of formative works of modern art, from Van Gogh and Cezanne through Mondrian to Warhol and beyond. Its presentation of contemporary art relies heavily on conceptual and video work. The overall experience was exhilarating. Here are a couple of examples.

View into the cafe and gift shop, with an amusing video of a a woman trying unsuccessfully to mount a very patient elephant.

Vivid signage on the floor and walls of the landing between first and second floors.
