Portland at Night

I missed a day in posting my Santiago photos. It turns out that I had a photo of Portland, Oregon at night scheduled for later. To maintain my one-post-a-day routine, I'm moving it to today. It meshes pretty well with the geometric, orange-hued pictures of Santiago.

Santiago, Chile

At the end of February we embarked on a cruise across the sub-Antarctic waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, from Ushuaia, Argentina to Cape Town, South Africa. To begin we flew from our home city of Portland, Oregon to Santiago, Chile. These photos show views from the window of our hotel room (and the last, the lobby of our hotel), emphasizing the geometry of new buildings in Santiago and the placement of the city in a broad, flat valley between steep mountains.

Fortuna Bay Penguins in the Scenery

On March 6 we landed in Fortuna Bay in South Georgia. Fortuna Bay has plentiful king penguins and some seals, though not as many as Salisbury Plain, but it makes up with dramatic scenery.

Palm Springs Street Fair

Mecca Hills Painted Canyon in Black and White

Despite the name, most of the rock walls in Mecca Hills Painted Canyon are rather monochrome, distinguished more by their structure and texture than by their color. Therefore, I decided to convert some of my color photos to black-and-white, hoping to emulate Edward Weston on Point Lobos. This and the next two blog postings will present the results.

Mecca Hills Painted Canyon (4)

The dry, rocky terrain of the Painted Canyon doesn't hold enough moisture for much vegetation, but the exceptions glow beautifully in the midday light.

A few photos of something other than rocks (except for the last picture).
