SFMOMA: Dan Flavin Neon

On the days before and after Peter Turnley's street photography workshop in San Francisco, I spent considerable time visiting SFMOMA - the extensively expanded and remodeled Museum of Modern Art. It's a spectacular building, with a splendid collection. I like to take photos of people in museums, interacting with the art and architecture, so that will be the theme for the next few days.

First, some photos of people in the glow of Dan Flavin's neon sculpture, installed in a darkened room to emphasize the vivid colors of the neon tubes.

Attraction

To conclude this series of scenes from Dolores Park in San Francisco, here are two that might fall under the title of "attraction".

First, two photos of Peter Turnley, on the ground, photographing a spectacularly beautiful woman who was hanging out with her friends.

And then a couple affectionately nuzzling, as befits the mood of a mellow afternoon in San Francisco.

Bolo Twirling in Dolores Park

I'm not sure what to call these weighted balls at the ends of ropes, but they remind me of the bolos tossed by Argentine gauchos to lasso cattle. (Although these are not at opposite ends of the same rope.) This fellow seemed to be in a very pleasant mood, befitting a warm, sunny afternoon in San Francisco. As in all these photos from Dolores Park, it's fun to look at people in the background.

Hoop Twirling in Dolores Park

Several people were twirling hoops in Dolores Park: not a single hoop around their hips, as in hula hoops, but several hoops twirled with their hands and arms. Here's one such fellow.

Spike Ball in Dolores Park

Spike ball players in SF's Dolores Park. It seemed to require a fair bit of skill, but little space.

Acro-Yoga in Dolores Park

Late one afternoon in Peter Turnley's San Francisco workshop we went to Dolores Park, near the historic Mission Dolores. It was a bright day, and people were out in force doing a variety of activities. Here is a series of photos of two women doing acro-yoga.

Clarion Alley Murals

Clarion Alley, near 16th and Mission in San Francisco, is one of the city's best, and best known, sites for murals. The presence of people among the art adds a special touch. More photos will come later.

Evening in North Beach

North Beach (former hangout of the Beats) adjoins Chinatown in San Francisco. Here are a few photos from my first evening at the Peter Turnley workshop.

SF Chinatown Photos (Part 2)

Lots of people on the streets of San Francisco's Chinatown, besides shopkeepers and shoppers.
