Evening Scenes in Manhattan

Walking back to our hotel after dinner on a somewhat hazy evening, these semi-abstract scenes presented themselves.

MOMA: Calder and Cezanne

Jumping ahead a few days to July 12, we paid our first visit in about five years to the Museum of Modern Art, which has been substantially expanded and remodeled. We paid special attention of an exhibit of mobiles by Calder, and a somewhat controversial exhibit of 250(!) drawings by Cezanne.

Little Island

Descending the south end of the High Line near the Whitney Museum (our goal for later in the day) we came to Little Island, a 2.4 acre public park in Hudson River Park on the west side of Manhattan. It's new, friendly, and fun on a comfortable sunny day.

Walk to the High Line

One of the great pleasures of New York City is just walking the streets and noting the colorful variety of scenes along the way. This was on our first full day, walking south from 41st to 34th, then west from Madison to 9th, then south along the High Line. The "8" in the first photo is a sculpture by Robert Indiana, in front of a hotel.

The Library Hotel

While in New York we stayed at the Library Hotel, at 41st and Madison in midtown, conveniently located to museums, restaurants, etc., and an interesting place in its own right. It lent itself well to the MonoD film style on my Panasonic digital camera.

Grafitti in Bushwick

We recently spent a week in New York City, visiting relatives and enjoying the city we haven't seen in a few years. My blog posts for the next week or so will be devoted to aspects of that visit. I'll begin with some photos from Bushwick, a neighborhood in Brooklyn which has become notable for its "aerosol paintings", a nice synonym for "grafitti" or "street art". Some blocks are almost completely covered, a cooperative arrangement between artists (often members of the "Bushwick Collective") and building owners.
