Sagres: Near the Southernmost Point of Europe

We drove from the mountains of Monchique, Portugal to the sea cliffs of Sagres, notable for several reasons. Sagres Point is approximately the southernmost point of Europe; it's the meeting of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea; and it's the place where Prince Henry the Navigator established his nautical school and sent his ships to explore and conquer Africa and and western lands. Little physical evidence of this history remains, but the site - on sheer cliffs high above the sea - is still impressive and has been reconstructed into an interesting park.

Lighthouse and other buildings on cliffs high above the sea.

Structure of concentric circular walls, amplifying the sound of waves crashing into a cave in the cliffs below into an intense roar in the central chamber.
