Barril Beach, Algarve

Near the town of Tavira, Portugal, where we're staying for a few days, is one of the finest beaches in the Algarve: Praia do Barril, or Barril Beach. Not only does it have a long expanse of clean, white sand. It also has a striking monument: the Graveyard of Anchors. 100 large, rusted anchors are arranged on a sandy slope. These were used to anchor nets during the time when fishing for bluefin tuna was a major commercial activity in this area.
