Madang Sightseeing

August 13: We spent a full day exploring some of the most important sights of Madang.

Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse

A huge banyan tree near the Lighthouse

Balek Wildlife Sanctuary. One can feed eels in this stream.

Or climb palm trees overhanging the stream.

A short walk leads to the source of the stream, with very clear water - smelling strongly of sulfur - flowing from underneath a huge limestone boulder.

Turtles clustered in the water by the boulder.

Then to the Bilbil village, noted for making fine clay pottery by hand, without a wheel.

A simple kiln to fire the pots.

Bilbil villagers put on a ceremonial dance for us. Village leader is at far right.

Cemetery at Alexishafen Catholic Mission Station, with graves of nuns and monks who died peacefully or who were executed by the Japanese in WW2.

An impressively large Madagascar fan palm
