Soweto

We got to Johannesburg a day before the Road Scholar program started so that we would have time to take our granddaughter to Soweto, a township in the city of Johannesburg, which has played such an important role in the history of South Africa and of inter-racial  conflicts generally around the world. The long and complex history, politics, and economics of Soweto (abbreviation of South Western Townships) are usefully summarized in a Wikipedia article.

My goal in this blog post, and the two that will follow, are to convey pictorially some of the salient features of this city within a city. The photos in this post focus on some visual impressions of Soweto, mainly its poverty, disorder, and militancy. This is by no means the full story, as will be seen in the following posts.
