Soweto: Walter Susulu Square of Dedication

Walter Susulu Square, formally the Walter Susulu Square of Dedication, is located in Kliptown,  Soweto's oldest suburb. According to Wikipedia, Susulu "was a South African anti-apartheid activist and member of the African National Congress (ANC), serving at times as Secretary-General and Deputy President of the organization. He was jailed at Robben Island, where he served more than 25 years' imprisonment." He was a close colleague of Nelson Mandela.

As one enters Walter Susulu Square, to the left is a long structure that houses an open-air covered market and, at the far end, the Soweto Hotel. To the right is the conical brick Freedom Charter Monument, commemorating the 1955 statement of core principles of the South African Congress Alliance with its opening demand "The People Shall Govern".
