Last Day in Ladakh

Wednesday, September 9

Today we drove back to Leh over a different pass (Wari La), not quite as high as Fotu La (only about 16,000+ feet) but over a road down the Nubra Valley that was at first in very bad shape due to recent flood and landslide. But then it got better and we had pleasant views as we descended into the Indus River Valley and back to Leh.

The steep-sided cliffs in this area are very stony. If there is a heavy rain during the monsoon season, the rocks may be washed onto the road, covering and damaging it.
It can close the road until repairs are made, which may take some time.

The dried mud forms interesting patterns.

Seen near the river down from the road: a Bactrian camel, one of many in this deserty area.

Later on, yaks grazing on the mountainside.

We stopped at Tangyar Village on our way up to Wari La pass.
Here are some scenes from that visit.
