Srinagar to Kargil, Kashmir to Ladakh

NOTE: Despite my pessimistic post yesterday, we have excellent wi-fi service today at a small hotel in the village of Dhiskit in the distant Nubra Valley in rural Ladakh, one of the last inhabited places before Chinese Tibet. I'll take advantage to post as much as I can.

Friday, September 4: Today we drove from Srinagar in Kashmir to Kargil in Ladakh - a big change in elevation, scenery, and culture.

Water for drinking and washing near a mosque.

Unloading a sheep the personal way.

A freight truck on a dusty, rocky road next to steep sandstone cliffs - a typical scene.

Our tour leader, Chris Carpenter (in green shirt at right) explaining the rock formations to some of our group. Near the Zoji Lal pass which marks the Kashmir-Ladakh boundary.

A lone, empty hut in a broad, flat green field against a steep mountain background.
The arrangement reminded us of places in Iceland.

The road winds between steep Himalayan mountains.
