Tomar: Convento de Cristo

A marked contrast to yesterday's post of the tiny synagogue in Tomar is the huge and elaborate Convento de Cristo, a monastic fortress and church built in 1160 by the Knights Templar, later known as the Knights of Christ. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and utterly spectacular.

Round church

One of the many cloisters

Tiles

Decorated pillars of the central octagon of the church

Detail of external pillar carved in Manueline style

Refectory

Food storage

Stairs to the cellar

Window in the most sumptuous Manueline style.
