Roman Bath at Carnuntum

Carnuntum was a Roman legionary fortress on the Danube, the long-time border of the Roman Empire. It was established about 6 AD and grew into a major settlement with a population of about 50,000. Its ruins are being excavated and restored in a fascinating archeological park near the Austrian border, about halfway between Vienna and Bratislava. These photos show one of the baths, with both an overview and some details. The restoration of the site is reminiscent of - and informed by - Pompeii, but with considerably more details of daily life.
