Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territoriy

May 11, 2018: The aim of our walk (yesterday's blog) was MAGNT, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Like all the other state museums and art galleries that we visited in Australia, it seemed fresh, lively, and filled with interesting art and objects. Here is a very small selection of what we saw.

Sardonic portrait bust by Jason Wing of "Captain James Crook": the explorer, Captain James Cook, esteemed by much of the world but not by the Australian Aborigines.

Detail of painting with long, painted sticks. I did not record the name of the Aboriginal artist.

"Custodian of the Blooms", by Brian Robinson

Sweetheart, a 5.1 metre saltwater crocodile responsible for a series of attacks on boats in Australia between 1974 and 1979. Sweetheart attacked outboard motors, dinghies, and fishing boats.

Detail of exhibit on the 1974 Darwin Cyclone

"Reinterpretation of Michael Nelson Tjakamarra Car Art", created as a representation of the journeys made by remote Aboriginal communities. Michael's earlier art has been printed onto vinyl and transferred to various car parts.

This posting concludes (at least as currently planned) my series on our five-week Australia trip. It was great! Next, back to Portland and future travels.
