Nile Village, Shrine, and Quarry

October 15: We visited a small village along the Nile, then later in the afternoon explored an ancient quarry and shrine of Horenheb at Selsela, with carved reliefs from the Middle Period. See Gebel el-Silsila on Wikipedia.

The villagers live much of their lives on the water.

Pumping station to bring Nile water for drinking and irrigation.

Drinking water must always be freely available.

In the afternoon, we had to walk from our boat over two others to get to shore at Selsela.

Guard who accompanied us on our walk to the Horenheb shrine and quarry.

One of several shrines carved into the limestone.

This quarry, and others like it, supplied fine limestone for monuments up and down the Nile.

Being next to the river made shipping the limestone much easier.

Another beautiful sunset back on board the Lazuli III - L'Orient.
