Hike through a Nature Preserve

May 13 (part 1): May 12 was rainy, windy, and uncomfortable, so I didn't take many photos - and none of those I did take were worthwhile. But May 13 made up for it, and I'll have three posts from that date. The first is from a walk through the Litorale di Ugento Regional, "a nature preserve that encompasses marshes, woodlands, ravines, and rocky beaches."

Taken from the balcony of our hotel room in Santa Maria di Leuca, before we set out for our hike. The stiff flags and strong waves were evidence of the stormy weather to come.

No sooner had we reached the entry to the park - a large stone arch with hollow spaces to each side - than a brief but vigorous thunderstorm, with small hailstones, began. We took refuge in the hollows, where we were joined by a couple of friendly dogs who - after the storm was over - accompanied us on the hike.
