Bath

May 26: We were driven from Bradford on Avon to Bath, where we decided to spend a thoroughly urban day rather than hiking through fields.

Vegetation on Stones in the Cotswolds

May 25: I have been struck by the beauty of flowers and colorful leaves against backgrounds of textured stone walls in the Cotswolds. Here are four examples from our walk today in the countryside around Bradford-on-Avon.

Lacock and Bradford-on-Avon

May 24: We were driven from Tetbury to Bradford-on-Avon, with an interesting two hour stop at Lacock along the way. Lacock is notable for two main things: Lacock Abbey, founded in the early 13th C and lived in continuously until 1944, when it and its surrounding lands were given to the National Trust; and the Fox Talbot Museum of Photography. Fox Talbot invented the negative process in photography in 1834 and patented it in 1839. He and his family lived for most of his life in the Abbey building.

The Abbey is full of books, many presumably used by Fox Talbot.

Cotswold Grasses

May 23: Another day of hiking, in unusually good weather, through the picturesque farm fields of the Cotswolds, near Tetbury. 12 miles, 27K steps. For this post I thought I would concentrate on a few photos of the beautiful grasses.

Cotswolds near Cirencester

May 22: Another beautiful day for walking in the Cotswolds, this time near the Bathurst Estate and the city of Cirencester.

A walk through fields of canola rapeseed and wheat.

Passing by a horse polo complex: bringing a horse to the field, exercising a group, and viewing the viewing stands where Prince Charles and Prince William, among others, view the games.

A group of solders being led through a conditioning march.

Column in the middle of the Bathurst Estate erected at the suggestion of Alexander Pope.
