Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina

After resting overnight from our flight from Buenos Aires to Mendoza, we set off the next morning with our guide to two wineries in the Uco Valley. From the internet, one learns "The Uco Valley is a key wine-growing region of Mendoza, Argentina. Located in a clearly defined valley an hour's drive south from the city of Mendoza, the region is home to the production of some of Mendoza's most famous wines. Argentina's icon grape variety of Malbec shines in the Uco Valley, producing terroir-driven red wines with a distinctive floral aroma."

As we entered the valley, however, there were some interesting things to see before we got to the wine: A strange hill-top Christ attended by agave plants and an old horse, and rows of sycamore trees with beautiful complex bark flanking a walk leading to a memorial for José de San Martin, the leader of the fight to liberate Argentina and the southern part of South America from Spain, (Simon Bolivar handled the north.)
