Coventry was the center of automobile manufacture in England for many years (Jaguar and much more). Beginning in the mid-1800s, the level of engineering expertise in the population grew from watch parts and sewing machines to bicycles and motorcycles to cars, trucks, and tanks. This is all chronicled in the wonderful Transport Museum, with actual vehicles, vivid wall displays, and effective video. A few examples:
