Behind the Scenes at the Savitsky Museum

The Savitsky Museum houses the second-largest collection of Russian avant-garde art, after the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. We were given a tour of the archives - a sampling of the thousands of paintings, textiles, and other objects not currently on display - by Marinika Babanazarov, the former director of the Museum. She became director after Savitsky's death in 1984, and served for more than 30 years, helping to safeguard the museum’s holdings from being sold to other museums and art collectors. (She is on the left in the third photo below.) The curators of the collection were clearly pleased to have her bring them such appreciative visitors.
