Kairouan, Tunisia

Kairouan, a few hours drive south of Tunisia, is the fourth holiest city in Islam, after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem.

Part of one of the Basins of Aghlabides, part of the ancient water collection and purification system of Kairouan.

This and the next five photos are of the Barber's Mosque (also called the Zaouia of Sidi Sahab), notable for its exquisite tile work (much of which was done in the 19th C).

(Above and below) Two scenes from the Great Mosque of Kairouan.

Modern painter's version of the elaborate tilework on ancient dome-shaped minarets.
