Sago palms grow abundantly along the river, and constitute a main resource of the villagers. They provide lumber and thatch for housing, and the pith is a major staple food. Below is a series of photos of steps along the way to preparing edible sago.
Removing the bark to get at the pith.
Chopping the pith into small pieces.
Crumbling the pith.
Pouring water into the crumbled pith to make a paste.
Shaping and baking the paste into a pancake/pita/tortilla.
Adding more water to the paste to make a gelatinous food.
Serving the sago "jello" with salad greens.
