We've just returned from four weeks in Papua New Guinea and Bali (plus neighboring eastern Indonesia islands). Images from these exotic places will be the content of this blog for the next month or so.
We flew from Portland to LA to Brisbane, Australia to Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. We were met by a representative of Zegrahm Expeditions, who took us to the Airways Hotel, where we recovered from the long journey. The hotel features an old plane, installed alongside its open-air restaurant.
In the afternoon we had a tour of the National Parliament House, whose exterior features some of the artistic themes we would see throughout the trip.
The next morning we were bused to the area of the Port Moresby airport that handles small private planes, and divided into two groups to fly (with our carefully weighed luggage) to the Karawari region of the Sepik River, which would be our base for the next several days.
Aerial view of the meanders of a small part of the Sepik River.
The arrival of our plane is a big event for the kids in Karawari.
Our home for the next several days, the 9-room river cruise boat Sepik Spirit, whose design is inspired by the local indigenous architecture, viewed from the riverbank at the edge of the airport.
Our tour leader, Jan Wheatley, with the inflatable (E.T.?) doll he uses to charm village kids.
