Yesterday (April 24) we began the day with a long (18K steps, about 12 km), spectacular walk around the base of Uluru, previously known as Ayers Rock. The photos below, about 5% of those I took on the walk, are roughly in chronological order: sunrise, trees and plants growing at the base, sun on the red sandstone, a daisy chain of caterpillars on the red sand, caves where elders sat and debated. a waterhole and black stains from a waterfall, and part of a large rock painting in a cave. Only about half of the perimeter of the rock can be photographed. This walk, though tiring, was one of the most vivid and beautiful that we have ever experienced.
