I’ll interpolate this post into my on-going Argentina/Patagonia/Uruguay series. Yesterday evening was First Thursday in Portland, when art galleries have their monthly openings. Blue Sky, our premier photography gallery, had a very special opening: the works of Robert Frank - prints, books, and films - “in a direct, accessible manner”, produced in a collaboration with the preeminent publisher of photobooks, Gerhard Steidl.
Steidl gave a fascinating introductory talk about the ideas behind this exhibit, and how it stems from the philosophies of himself and Frank about making art accessible to everyone and wresting control from super-rich galleries and collectors. I’ve posted a few photos of Steidl speaking, the walls of the gallery, and the standing-room audience. In keeping with the Frank esthetic, the images are black & white.
