The next day, while my wife was still involved in her meetings, I walked to La Recoleta Cemetery, one of the great cemeteries of the world. According to the Wikipedia article, well worth reading, “Set in 5.5 hectares (14 acres), the site contains 4691 vaults, all above ground, of which 94 have been declared National Historical Monuments by the Argentine government and are protected by the state.” My photo project for the day, however, was to focus on the monuments and mausoleums that have fallen into disrepair - a sort of memento mori idea. This will take nearly a week of postings, starting today with overviews and undecayed details that still show the grandeur and dignity of the memorials.
