End of the Season Cornucopia

This Saturday at the Portland Farmers' Market. The rich bounty of summer and fall produce is coming to an end, but new things - like these multi-colored carrots - are appearing.

Working the Scene

A small area of wall and fence by a building being torn down in Portland's Pearl District yielded a number of pictures that - to me at least - have the appeal of abstract art.

Portland Mysteries

Two photos that seem somehow akin in mood, though different in everything else.

Portland Night Market

Portland is the home of pop-ups: food vendors and little shops that occupy unused spaces for a day or two, then disappear until the next week (or month, or maybe forever). The latest manifestation of this genre is the Portland Night Market, a collection of many small vendors and a few food carts that, last night and today, took over an empty warehouse near the river and railroad tracks in the Central Eastside Industrial District. This was not a small happening—it claims to be modeled after the Portland Saturday Market and night food markets in Taiwan—it was well advertised, and it drew a large crowd, so it will undoubtedly be repeated. The food offerings were disappointing, but it was interesting to be there to experience the beginnings of a new manifestation of Portlandia.

Japanese Garden

Portland's Japanese Garden is closed for expansion and renovation until early next year. But it's been an inexhaustible source of attractive photographic scenes. Here are three, taken some months ago.
