July 18, 2018. Rhinoceros are one of the must-see "Big Five", and we knew there was one in the Plumari Game Reserve, but our previous game drive had not located it. It (a female) is very shy, because its relatives had all been killed by poachers. Finally, a couple of guides were sent out to make a last-ditch effort to find it, and were successful, so we bundled into the Land Cruisers for a look. The rhino was in an area we had passed through yesterday, but was very well hidden. It gradually moved into photographable position and I got a couple of useable images through the brush (thanks to the special pin-point focus setting on my Lumix ZS200 along with effective 720 mm focal length). Note that the horns have been largely removed, to make the rhino less attractive to poachers.
In the late afternoon we hiked up a hill near the lodge to look for prehistoric rock carvings. We found many, but they did not make interesting photos. However, the setting sun gave an attractive warm glow to the rocks and grass. Returning to the lodge, I took a couple of photos of impressive life-size sculptures of two rhinos and a Cape buffalo in the evening light.
