On July 14, before the Road Scholar program started, we arranged a private tour of Soweto. On the way, our driver/guide stopped at large, high-walled home in the upscale Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, where Nelson Mandela lived after retiring from the presidency of South Africa. On the dirt strip surrounding the house, between sidewalk and street, were numerous small squares filled with rocks painted with commemorative messages. Here is an example.
