July 18, 2018. At the Askari Game Lodge in Plumari Game Reserve, we spent the morning interacting with the two trained elephants - both males, one 22 years old, the other 24 if I remember correctly. Actually, all the interaction was with one; the other seemed to be there mainly for companionship.
The featured interaction was for each of us - children and grandparents - to feed the elephant slices of an apple, first by hand, then by holding it in our mouth and letting the elephant pluck it out with its trunk, and finally thank us by giving us a kiss with its trunk. A slightly scary and messy experience, but fun after all. Then the elephant laid down and let the group feel its rough hide.
These animals are really massive, as I've tried to emphasize in the first and last photos.
