The entire city of Yazd is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 5th Century AD, it is isolated in stark desert for hundreds of miles in all directions, which shielded it from invaders who sacked more accessible cities. There was lots to photograph on our tour, and I think there will be a week of postings. I begin with views of the Friday Mosque, whose entrance portal is the highest of any mosque in Iran, and whose exquisite tilework is exemplary of the country's.
