Rather than rebuilding the ancient Canterbury Cathedral after its bombing in WW2, the authorities decided to build a new one, in modern style, adjacent to the old one. The result is beautiful, one of the best modern buildings I've ever seen. It incorporates the standard elements of a major church, but in new and striking ways. Here are some examples.
