Day 4, October 12. In the VERY early morning (thanks, Air Egypt) we flew from Cairo to Luxor, site of the ancient city of Thebes. There are two massive temples here, built by generations of pharaohs over a thousand years. We went first to the Temple of Karnak.
Two of the 134 massive columns in the Hypostyle Hall; photo composed to emphasize their width and close spacing.
The occasional remaining patches of color give a hint of how vibrant this temple used to be.
Looking upward in the Hypostyle Hall. The columns used to support a roof.
Seven of the hundreds of sphinxes along the 3 km long Avenue of Sphinxes that connects the Temple of Karnak with the Temple of Luxor. (see next post).
A baby pharaoh under the protection of one of the sphinxes.
