May 11: We drove from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost point on the heel of Italy's boot. Our first stop was near the town of Costrano, where we hiked past fields of colorful wildflowers down to the Adriatic Sea, where for centuries peasants and traders collected and sold salt that had dried in tidal pools. A tough daily hike up and down carrying heavy loads!
Arriving in Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas merge, we boated along the coast, enjoying the brightly colored coastal cliffs and caves and the clear blue-green water.
We also saw some interesting man-made structures along the sea: a tall lighthouse, a fantastic castle built by a wealthy man for his lover, and a long row of huge concrete breakwater jacks protecting the harbor.
