May 10: A beautiful, if strenuous, day spent hiking (approx. 18K steps, 8 miles) in and around the historic town of Otranto, in the Apulia region. It is the eastern-most point of Italy.
Streets, walls, and arches dating back to Greek and Roman times
A beautiful, not overcrowded in this off-season, marina and fishing port
An 11th C cathedral, with cases of skulls and bones of martyrs who refused to convert to Islam
A very rocky coast and interior, outside the town
Watchtowers for sighting Moslem and other invaders coming over the Adriatic Sea
Profusions of beautiful wildflowers
