Leh to Diskhet

Tuesday, September 8

A long driving day, but an interesting one, from Leh in the Indus Valley to Diskhet in the Nubra Valley, where we'll spend the night. To get from one to the other, we have to drive over the highest motorable road in the world, through Kargung La pass at about 18,000 feet.

Prayer flags and a few buildings mark the Kardung La.

View from the men's toilet at Kardung La.

Yet another view of the spectacular mountains, glaciated and sprinkled with snow. At some places in the pass, the snow was several feet deep, but the road was mainly clear.

Our guide Rinchin and four car drivers prepare to serve us lunch on a boulder-strewn meadow halfway down to the Nubra Valley.

The braided Shayok River and the strikingly flat valley it has produced.

Part of the 500 year old mani (prayer) wall, capped by a chorten (stupa) near the river and Hundar Village about 7 km from Diskhet. The wall is about 4 feet high and hundreds of feet long.

A few of the many elaborately carved flat rocks on the mani wall.

A colorful chorten near the river and Hundar Village.

Chortens on the hillside and overlooking the river.

Bushes along a pretty lane in Hundar Village.

Willows against a cliff with one of many fan-shaped rockslides, across the valley.
