Two Weeks in Namibia

Getting today's blog posted has been a bit delayed, because my wife Elsa Shapiro and I have just returned from Namibia with over 2000 photos. A great two week trip, but very tiring: two full days going - Portland to Amsterdam the first day (5004 miles, approx 10 hours), Schipol to OR Tambo Johannesberg the second day (5584 miles, approx 11 hours), overnight in an airport hotel. The next morning a short commercial flight (1200 km, 2 hours) from Johannesberg to Windhoek, the capitol of Namibia, Then a relatively short but very bumpy flight from the Windhoek airport to our first lodge in Sossusvlei (302 km or 188 mi should have taken about 1 hour, but took 2 hr because of turbulent skies.)

Elsa and our pilot, Dietrich, in front of our 4-seater plane at the Windhoek airport.

The skies directly over our Beechcraft look suitably summery, but those in the background coalesce into continuous strong turbulence which abated only as we neared Windhoek.
