About four hours drive northwest of Khiva is Nukus, the capital of the autonomous region of Karakalpakstan. It's a modern city, albeit mingled with old caravan routes and ancient ruins, and surrounded by water-draining cotton fields. Our purpose in going there was to visit the wonderful Savitskiy Art Museum (which will be the subject of the next three posts), but in this post I want to show some of the empty, arid territory that makes up so much of this part of Uzbekistan.
