Along the Ganges River from Varanasi to Kolkata

I've just returned from a wonderful Road Scholar trip in India, along the Ganges from Varanasi (also known as Benares) to Kolkata (Calcutta). The next several weeks of this blog will present photos from this visually intense region. I'll begin with a series of characteristic day-by-day photos along the route, then follow with more thematic sets of pictures.

January 23-24: From New Delhi to Varanasi

In the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, waiting to board the flight to Varanasi. The spectacular bas relief depicts a traditional folk celebration using the remarkable carving skills seen throughout our trip.
