Tomar came after Batalha on our drive north in Portugal. We visited two old religious establishments that could not be more different: a tiny synagogue and a huge Convento de Cristo.
The synagogue first: It's both a functioning synagogue, on the infrequent occasions when a minyan can be assembled, and a museum of Jewish religious artifacts. The first photo shows my wife, Elsa Shapiro, with the lady who rescued the synagogue from neglect and proudly shows it to visitors.
