During our visit to the Wallowas, we stayed at a B&B in Enterprise, the county seat and largest town in Wallowa County. Here are a few scenes from the town.

Joseph

The town of Joseph (named after Chief Joseph, portrayed in the last image below) is the tourist center of the Wallowas. It has some decent restaurants, colorful antiques and a brass foundry of national prominence, with examples nicely displayed throughout the town.

Zumwalt Prairie

On the second day of our trip to the Wallowas, we took the advice of the proprietors of our B&B and drove to Zumwalt Prairie, at 330,000 acres the largest essentially intact area of native prairie remaining in the northwestern United States. Much of it is lightly used for grazing (once buffalo, now cattle), but 4,400 acres is set aside as the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve under the stewardship of The Nature Conservancy. On its eastern border is a stupendous view down into the Hells Canyon area.

East Fork of the Wallowa River Trail

In the afternoon of our first day in the Wallowas, we hiked part of the trail leading along the East Fork of the Wallowa River. It was rather rocky and dusty, due to the grinding of the dirt by hooves of horses ridden along this trail, and the vistas were not as open and colorful as on the Hurricane Creek Trail. Nevertheless, it was a good hike until thunder in the distance led us to retreat from the heights.

Wallowa Mountains - Hurricane Creek Trail (1)

In mid-August we spent a few days in the spectacular scenery of the Wallowa Mountains in northeastern Oregon. Our first hike was on the Hurricane Creek Trail in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The trail was beautiful, though there was evidence of a fire not so long ago.

Victoria Falls from the Zambia Side

July 24, 2018. In the late morning of this last day of our Road Scholar Intergenerational Program in southern Africa, our bus took us to the Zambia side of Victoria Falls. The rainbows - especially the double rainbows - as the bright sun struck the spray from the falls, were spectacular. Also notable was a brave fisherman trawling the waters just above the falls with net and spear.

Please note that this will be my last post on this blog about our Road Scholar African adventure (though the blog itself will continue daily as before). The first post appeared on July 29, just after we returned home to Oregon and got back on the internet. It dealt with the last festive event of this program, our sunset boat cruise on the Zambezi River. (Confused yet?) I hope you have enjoyed this chronicle of our adventure as much as we did in participating in it.
