From Wikipedia: "Jacques Romain Georges Brel was a Belgian singer and actor who composed and performed theatrical songs. He generated a large, devoted following—initially in Belgium and France, but later throughout the world. He is considered a master of the modern chanson." He died of lung cancer at the age of 49, and asked to be buried in relative isolation in the cemetery at Atuana in Hiva Oa, just a couple of meters from the grave of Paul Gauguin. He flew himself and a few friends to the Marquesas in a small plane, which features prominently in his museum there.
