Jahangira Island Temple

Ajgaibinath Temple on Jahangira Island in the Ganges is a popular, colorful pilgrimage site. The pilgrims anoint the carvings, which are of exceptional quality, with red pigment dispensed for a small price. They also bathe in the Ganges. We enjoyed our visit there, despite its wet and slippery steps. 

Monghyr Market

Monghyr (or Munger) in eastern Bihar has a very colorful and bounteous market. I wish we could have stayed longer; there were many more pictures to take.

Detour Through a Village

Trying to drive from where our ship was docked to Nalanda in the state of Bihar, we were diverted onto a side road and through a village by an accident that blocked the highway. It was a fortunate detour, since the village was very colorful.

Along the Road to Patna

After Bodhgaya we drove toward Patna, the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Bihar. Here are some photos, from the bus and from ground level, that give a sense of the people (especially kids) and villages along the way.

Evening at the Mahabodi Temple in Bodhgaya, which commemorates the place where the Buddha achieved enlightenment after meditating for days or weeks under a sacred fig tree. The temple is a major pilgrimage site.

Varanasi to Bodhgaya Reflections

After three full days in Varanasi we drove to Bodhgaya, where the Buddha achieved enlightenment. We crossed rivers along the way, producing some attractive scenes.
