 Like most of the South Pacific islands, Mangareva has areas of lush vegetation.

After a day at sea from Pitcairn, we arrived at Mangareva, the main island of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia. As evident from its jagged profile, it is the visible part of an old volcano.

From New World Encyclopedia: "The Pitcairn Islands are a group of four islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. The islands are a British overseas territory (formerly a British colony), the last remaining in the Pacific. Only Pitcairn Island—the second largest—is inhabited. The islands are best known for being the home of the descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers and the Tahitians who accompanied them, an event retold in numerous books and films. With only around 50 permanent inhabitants, Pitcairn is also famed for being the least populated country in the world."

We were able to spend a day on Pitcairn Island, in and around Adamstown, enjoying its attractive scenery and friendly people.

The mayor of Adamstown, the capital of the Pitcairn Islands. He was not a native, but was about to take a supply vessel to England to represent the Pitcairns at the coronation of King Charles III.
