The historic district of Colonia, Uruguay is small and kept relatively "pure", but there was one short street that had some interesting contemporary murals. The last photo was taken in a cafe where we had lunch, but its mood seemed to fit with the rest of these images.

Colonia Museums

We had one full day in Colonia, Uruguay, which we spent wandering around the historic district with its many small museums and other picturesqueness. Here are some photos from the museums, mainly of colonial and indigenous life.

Having returned to Buenos Aires from Patagonia, our next stop was Uruguay. One more country on our life-list, and one that I had written a report about in 7th grade social studies class! It's an easy ferry ride from BA to Colonia del Sacramento, founded in 1680 under Portuguese influence. Our hotel was in the historic district. Here are some photos from our first afternoon and evening in town. (The last one is of the city's casino in the evening - rather out of character for this sedate small city.)

Upsala Glacier Tour: Estancia Cristina

After our scenic hill climb, we got in a van and drove a short distance to Estancia Cristina, a large sheep and cattle ranch that's been in operation for many years. An interesting guided tour explains how life and business were (and are) carried out in this exceedingly remote place.

Upsala Glacier Tour: Looking Toward the Glacier

Upsala Glacier is supposedly the largest in South America, about four times the area of Perito Moreno Glacier. But its front is blocked from direct viewing by ice and rock falls, so it's hard to get a good view of its size. However, getting off the boat and hiking up a hill gives an attractive view down, and the glacier-sculpted, mineral-rich rocks provide wonderful colors that more than compensate.

Upsala Glacier Tour: On Lago Argentina

For our last day of touring in Patagonia, we took a boat tour on Lago Argentina to the Upsala Glacier. (Studied by a Swedish group from Uppsala University.) Here are a few iceberg and scenic photos along the way.
