Studio Sessions: Syd Fossum

Syd Fossum was one of the old guard of Twin Cities artists. He was working on a self-portrait, which of course required a mirror, when I visited his studio and took this triple portrait.

Studio Sessions: Jerry Rudquist

Jerry Rudquist, whom I met at a Saturday soiree in Suzanne Kohn's gallery, was on the faculty at Macalester College in Saint Paul. He was an extremely good painter in an abstract mode, and a charming conversationalist to boot.

Studio Sessions: Mike Price

I met Mike Price at Suzanne Kohn's Gallery, and arranged to photograph him in his studio at Hamline University in St. Paul. His life-sized and lifelike bronze statues are very striking. One of F. Scott Fitzgerald stands in Rice Park in St. Paul.

Studio Sessions: Shirley Johnson

Shirley Johnson was Warren McKenzie's partner at the time, and a fine potter in her own right. I photographed her on the same trip out to their St. Croix studios; the light was even better on her.

Studio Sessions: Warren McKenzie

Warren McKenzie has been one of the leading potters in the country for decades. He specializes in "functional" pottery, but the artistic content is unmistakeable. His studio, near the St. Croix River that separates Minnesota from Wisconsin (and that provides good clay), became the nucleus of studios of many younger potters.

Studio Sessions: Museum Directors

The Twin Cities has two world-class art museums: the Minneapolis Museum of Art and the Walker Art Center. I was able to persuade their directors to pose for this project.

Studio Sessions: Suzanne Kohn

Suzanne Kohn ran a gallery on Grand Avenue in Saint Paul. Her Saturday afternoon drop-ins, which reminded me of Paris salons, drew a cross-section of Twin Cities artists, especially those teaching in Saint Paul colleges. I met a number of my photo subjects there, and had my first show of artist photographs there in 1976.
